Growing up in a family and culture where gathering was a way of life, holidays were magical and chaotic in the best way. Relatives from near and far would come together to feast, celebrate, and simply be with one another. There were no formal start or end times. Guests came when they could, ate when they arrived, and stayed until the last dish was served. Everyone was welcome, and there was always room for more.
That sense of open invitation shaped how I lived much of my adult life. I had a habit of inviting everyone to anything I attended—even when it wasn’t my event to host. It felt natural, almost necessary, to make sure no one was left out. It took time (and a few awkward conversations) for me to realize that not everyone shares this same value of inclusivity. I’ve had to learn boundaries and respect others’ guest lists. Yet, even now, it tugs at my heart not to invite everyone, everywhere.
But while humans may have guest lists, God doesn’t.
In God’s house, everyone is welcome. There’s no application process, no requirement to bring the perfect side dish, and no checking of credentials at the door. God’s table is set for all. He doesn’t measure your worthiness or consider how you’ll get along with the other guests. He simply says, “Come.”
This is beautifully illustrated in Jesus’ parable about the king who prepared a wedding feast (Luke 14:15-24). Invitations were sent to the expected guests, but they made excuses and didn’t come. The king then opened his invitation to everyone—the poor, the rejected, and the forgotten. Those who the world overlooked were given seats of honor at the banquet.
What a picture of God’s heart!
Still, many of us decline His invitation. Maybe we’re too busy, too hurt, or too skeptical. Maybe we’re worried about sitting next to someone we don’t like, or we believe the feast isn’t meant for us. Whatever the reason, when we reject God’s invitation, we’re the ones who miss out—on the feast, the celebration, and the joy. The party continues, but without us.
So let me ask you: Where have you been declining a seat at God’s table? What invitations have you ignored because it felt inconvenient or unimportant?
God’s invitation is open. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, or where you come from. You are welcome. So put on your party shoes and come to the table. God has prepared a feast for you, and it promises to be the best celebration you’ve ever attended.
There’s always room. Will you say yes?
